Building an international business career
With the opening up of the worldwide marketplace, more opportunities are now available. But since it is easier to communicate, share ideas, and work internationally, the competition has also become world wide. Quality, now more than ever, plays a more central role as employers have the liberty and option to hire only the best to work for them. In other words, the playground may have gotten bigger, but for the top quality international business jobs, it is still the survival of the fittest.
Building an international business career today is also slightly augmented. In the past, to do so almost always meant training to be an expat. The problem with this kind of setup is that an expat, other than the knowledge requirement, more importantly has a lifestyle component. In order to even be considered being hired as an expat b a company, they look at aspects of your life which are often unrelated to you work specialty. Things such as travel experience, foreign language capability, social adaptability, and even civil status are carefully evaluated before being considered. This option is also quite difficult for companies since hiring an expat is a pretty big investment. Aside from the actual salary, you have to provide adequate living facilities for the person as you are relocating him (sometimes with his entire family) to another country with possibly a different culture and language. Also, some foreign countries require numerous permits which can be quite costly and tedious to provide. Generally, this older form of international business career is not for everyone. Despite the impressive salary and the opportunity to travel, many employees shy away from this option as they do not want to drastically change their lifestyle and go beyond their comfort zone.
Fortunately, the advances in technology have now made it possible for a person to offer his expertise to corporations a world away without leaving the comfort of his own living room. Through the internet, foreign companies can hire experts in their field without necessarily sending someone out there. Aside from the monetary savings, this is also most beneficial as you can get locals to work for you who do not have to adjust to a different culture and language. From the perspective of the worker, getting hired by a big multinational is also an advantage as he is made privy to the way the company works without having to completely alter his lifestyle. In short, building an international business career is now losing its lifestyle requirement and is now more about the person’s actual skill. A graphic artist from the Philippines for instance, can show off his work and get hired by an advertising agency in the United Kingdom without him having to relocate there. For as long as his work is good enough, he can now make it completely speak for itself. This streamlining of business is technology’s true gift and advantage. It is a leveling of the playing field where the talented and capable can make a difference.
